Every child has a brain; stop killing it.

In African society, it is expected of children to always keep mute whenever adults are having their discussion.  Even when it seems as if  the issues that are at hand are hard and all hands are expected to be on the deck, children are still considered irrelevant.  I also have this mentality, but it changed today when what seemed insurmountable by me was solved by a little child.

Wednesdays are always for reasoning in the school where I teach, every pupil has two textbooks called verbal and quantitative reasoning. All the exercises in these textbooks require intensive reasoning,  so today in the school,  the quantitative reasoning exercise that was meant for my class was a kind of tactic and I tried every possible method, but it wasn't working. In the process, I allowed my pupils to also sit in twos and also reason together.

I was about to give up on the exercise when one of them shouted “I got it”. At first, I thought it was a joke when she said it and believe me, she got the exercise and I was proud in my heart that I have a brain in my class.

This made me realize that many times, the solution might lie in the hands of a child but that mentality that we have carried about them.

Children too have brains and if we don't allow the expression of what they possess, they will only think low about themselves and this might result in an inferiority complex.  Never allow them to do beyond themselves, but ensure that they express their brains and the wisdom that they possess.

Give them chances and opportunities to use the brain they possess.
